Why annual servicing matters

Most boiler breakdowns aren't sudden. They start as a small fault that gradually gets worse: a slightly weak ignition, a heat exchanger beginning to scale up, a gas valve that's working harder than it should. A service catches these things when they're a ten-minute fix rather than a major repair in January.

Efficiency matters too. A gas boiler that hasn't been serviced for a few years will typically be running less efficiently than it should: combustion not quite right, too much or too little gas getting through, slightly incorrect air/gas ratio. It burns more and delivers less. A properly serviced boiler runs to specification.

For manufacturers' warranties: most require an annual service carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer to remain valid. It's worth checking your documentation. Skipping a service to save money can void a warranty that would otherwise cover a significant repair or replacement.

What we check

A full service covers: visual inspection of the boiler and flue, flue gas analysis with a combustion analyser, cleaning of the heat exchanger, burner inspection and cleaning, checking all seals and connections, testing the pressure relief valve, checking the expansion vessel, and testing the appliance through its full operating cycle.

We give you a clear service record, note anything that needs attention, and give you a straight view on the condition of the boiler. If we find something worth addressing while we're there, we'll tell you the cost before touching it.

If the service reveals a fault that needs repair, see our boiler repair page. If the boiler is clearly approaching end of life, we'll give you a replacement quote at the same visit: see boiler installation.

Oil boiler servicing

Many properties across rural Dorset, Devon and Somerset are on oil rather than mains gas. Oil boilers have their own service requirements: nozzle replacement, filter cleaning, photocell check, combustion analysis. We service oil boilers as well as gas, and the annual schedule is just as important given how rural oil-heated properties often find it harder to get rapid repair cover in cold weather.

Book a service before September if you can. The autumn backlog is real and a service booked in July is easier to schedule than one in October when everyone else has the same idea.
